Keeping Your Smile Safe for Halloween: Dental Abrasion and Candy

Posted .

Although dental abrasion can occur at any time, it is often most prevalent during the holiday seasons due to the fact that numerous individuals consume extraordinary amounts of candy and other treats. During Halloween, it is important to exercise caution to ensure your smile can thrive.

Make sure your cleaning utensils are up to the task. This includes a toothbrush that has soft bristles and toothpaste that is low abrasive fluoride and bicarbonate. Also remember to never brush after eating, as your teeth can be extra sensitive at this time. Instead, rinse your mouth out with water or try alternative cleaning products such as mouthwash or even chewing sugarless gum. Chewing sugarless gum after meals have been shown to help stimulate saliva flow and prevent dental abrasion by neutralizing acids in your mouth.

Exercise caution with acidic foods and drinks that you may consume this holiday season. This includes extremely acidic products such as sour sweets and fruit drinks. In addition to consuming less acidic products, make sure that anyone who does consume them does so as part of larger meals, which can help neutralize acids. Never eat acidic substances as stand-alone snacks.
